Doha, April 22 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organized Monday a two-day workshop on preparing Qatar's Second National Communication and the biennial update report (BTR and BUR), in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) West Asia Office.
The workshop addresses methods and approaches for preparing the report, which includes a list of greenhouse gases for five main sectors: energy, industrial activities, agriculture and land use, and waste. It also covers technical matters related to emission sources for a national emissions inventory, in line with Sustainable Development Goals and Qatar National Vision 2030, in addition to contributing to writing the required reports under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In this context, Assistant Director of the Climate Change Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Mahmoud Al Marwani emphasized that today's workshop is part of the ministry's efforts to qualify national cadres in preparing the Second National Communication and to inform them of the most important updates continuously made in this regard by relevant international bodies. He pointed out that duties were assigned to the team responsible for preparing and providing the required information and data, as well as determining the type and quantity of available data, in addition to agreeing on data collection mechanisms and ensuring quality to start collecting information related to the greenhouse gas inventory.
Al Marwani noted that the workshop was attended by representatives of relevant local government agencies and institutions, contributing to aligning visions among state institutions to work on preparing these important reports. A detailed action plan was developed with a specific timetable to enable the timely preparation of the required database.
He pointed out that the workshop is part of the significant efforts made by the ministry, within Qatar's commitment to its international obligations to mitigate the effects of climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and take ambitious measures to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030 in environmental protection.
The workshop included several sessions and presentations, where Eng. Susan Al Banna, UNEP technical advisor, presented an overview of the data collection mechanisms within the national communications and updated reports for the two-year period. The proposed official data collection book was also reviewed to reach the final version required according to national circumstances.
The Second National Communication (SNC) and the First Biennial Update Report (BUR1) work to disseminate issues related to climate change in Qatar and its environmental, social, and economic impacts. (QNA)
